This year, the CHEST Foundation collaborated with the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) and the Feldman Family to host the 4th Annual Irv Feldman Texas Hold’em and Casino Night in Deerfield, Illinois. The Feldman Family founded the Irv Feldman Texas Hold’em and Casino Night in 2013 in memory of their father who had succumbed to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). For the last 4 years, the Feldmans have hosted events to raise money to help end pulmonary fibrosis, and this year’s featured a poker tournament, silent auction, dinner buffet, and live entertainment. This local community-based event resulted in $190,047 raised to fight pulmonary fibrosis. These proceeds will support pulmonary fibrosis patient education, disease awareness, and clinical research, in collaboration with the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation
The CHEST Foundation completed successful disease state awareness campaigns for sarcoidosis, lung cancer, COPD, and asthma.
In April 2017, the CHEST Foundation and Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research launched the “Seek Answers. Inspire Results.” campaign to raise awareness about sarcoidosis. The campaign, kicked off in tandem with the National Sarcoidosis Awareness Month, encouraged people living with sarcoidosis to take a proactive role in their treatment plan. This year, the foundation partnered with three health-care organizations to disseminate materials across their social media and member communications:
• American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
• COPD Foundation
• Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS)
The campaign’s sarcoidosis microsite received more than 25,000 views in April and May, while our overall reach was much wider:
• Member Communications: 20K total impressions
• Twitter: 21.7K total impressions
• Facebook: 40K+ total impressions
• STAT News: 45.7K+ total reach
• Press release: 11.6M+ total reach
In an effort to reach the public and continue to bridge the gap between patient and clinician, we expanded our COPD disease awareness campaign in 2017, to include the Lung Health Experience. This interactive lung health expo brings local respiratory therapists and leading lung health experts to pubic events in a fun and inviting atmosphere. The event allows members of the community to connect with local lung health champions so that they can begin a conversation about their lung health outside of the clinical setting, get their lungs screened by a respiratory therapist or pulmonologist, learn about different disease states, and gain empathy for those who are living with conditions like asthma and COPD.
By the end of 2017, the Lung Health Experience will have toured Oklahoma City, Nashville, Chicago, and Toronto.
The CHEST Foundation and Allergy & Asthma Network once again joined forces in an effort to empower patients suffering from severe or difficult to control asthma.
This year’s asthma disease awareness campaign was launched at “The Air We Breathe” summit with The Atlantic in Chicago in April. More than 150 people attended the summit, but the reach was more than 4.9 million via social and traditional media. To read about the event that focused on the quality of our air and the implications on our health, visit chestfoundation.org/summit.
For the second year of this growing Asthma campaign, we created several new and useful materials.
SEVERITY ASSESSMENT TOOL
Available online and in print, the severity assessment tool was designed to help a patient and clinician understand the severity of their asthma.
PATIENT AND CAREGIVER TESTIMONIALS
The campaign features several patient and caregiver testimonials that tell stories from the perspective of patients as well as parents of children with severe asthma.
SHARED DECISION MAKING TOOL
Through collaboration across the CHEST Foundation, American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), and Allergy & Asthma Network, a new shared decision making tool for adult patients with asthma was developed for launch at CHEST 2017. This tool will help patients and clinicians work together to improve self-management skills, choose the best treatment plan for the patient, and increase adherence.
Our newest disease awareness campaign in 2017 focuses on lung cancer. This campaign launched mid-May and continued through World Lung Cancer Day on August 1, 2017. We partnered with the Bonnie J. Addarrio Lung Cancer Foundation and LUNGevity to produce:
• Biopsy-specific infographics
• An animated biopsy video to show the importance of collecting core tissue to create targeted therapies
• Social media shareable postcards
• Updated lung cancer guide and infographic
• New lung cancer landing page & website
In August, the CHEST Foundation and Lung Cancer Social Media (#LCSM) hosted a Twitter chat on “5 Questions Related to Lung Cancer Biopsies.” The foundation also partnered with Reddit to host an Ask Me Anything (AMA) event with Gerard Silvestri, MD, FCCP, focused on barriers in diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
From May through August, the lung cancer campaign reached more than 125,000 visitors/participants.
New Patient Education Materials
The CHEST Foundation creates trusted patient education resources and disease awareness campaigns that empower patients to engage in better managing their health.
Chest medicine professionals develop clinically accurate and up-to-date content for these resources. Then, the CHEST Foundation expands the reach of these materials by partnering with CHEST’s 19,000+ members and with organizations like the American Lung Association, Allergy and Asthma Network, COPD Foundation, Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research and the American Osteopathic Association. This year, we expanded our library with materials on 25+ new topics.
The CHEST Foundation received over 100 applications for grant funding in 2017 and introduced two new grants: CHEST Foundation Research Grant in Cystic Fibrosis and CHEST Foundation Research Grant in Asthma.
This year, we launched the Lung Health Experience tour in conjunction with the COPD campaign, designed to build awareness of lung health, screen for COPD, promote healthy lung habits, and provide patient education on lung health habits.
